Account books, 1826-1828, 1843-1847, 1849-1851, and 1854-1859, kept by sailmaker William D. Murphy of New York City. Volumes record hundreds of accounts with persons, firms, or ships for making and repairing sails and rigging, for costs of materials and labor, for expenses such as cartage, and for sales of twine, bags, needles, duck, rope, etc. Among the entries are accounts with firms of Grinnell Minturn & Co., Novelty Iron Works, Merritt & Co., and Stillman Allen & Co.; the individuals George Law, Samuel M. Megie, Isaac Newton, David Tyler, and Cornelius Vanderbilt; the ships Illinois, Flying Cloud, Roanoke, Patrick Henry, North Star, and Exchange; and many others.
